Crime Stoppers offer reward for suspect in scrap steel thievery

    On Nov. 1, 2010, the Beaufort County Sheriff's Office received a report of a larceny that occurred on Pollard Road in Chocowinity. The report indicated that scrap steel was stolen.

    The Sheriff's Office began an investigation, collected evidence and conducted interviews. During the investigation, deputies discovered that the stolen steel was sold at a recycling business located in Vanceboro.

    As a result, investigator Ernest Moore applied for and obtained warrants charging Matthew Roughton, age 19, of Pollard Road in Chocowinity, with one count of Obtaining Property by False Pretenses and one count of Misdemeanor Larceny.

    Roughton is still at large. If you have any information on the whereabouts of Matthew Roughton, please call Beaufort County Crime Stoppers at 252-974-6400. Crime Stoppers will pay up to a $1,000 reward for information leading to his arrest. Callers do not have to give their name to receive a reward.
